Biography
Irving Layton (né Israel Pincu Lazarovitch) was born in Romania and raised in Montreal. Alongside other poets like Raymond Souster, Layton pushed for the development of modern Canadian poetry. He was tutored in Latin by A.M. Klein, worked on his PhD under the supervision of F. R. Scott, and later mentored Leonard Cohen. He was an Officer of the Order of Canada and won many awards for his writing.
