Jill

Jill had Jack
But Jack had
His beanstalk
And Jack had
His candlestick.

Jill wasn’t Jack’s first choice.
She had her pail of water
Though, it made for a poor acquaintance.

Jill craved for Jack to treat her
Like he did
His beanstalk
And his candlestick.

Jack would rather be with them
For his beanstalk was tall
And made him feel superior.
His candlestick was unpredictable
Which made him feel
A constant thrill of excitement.

Jack never thought bad of Jill,
For she was loyal.

She wasn’t his first choice
Because, for what he knew,
She was content with waiting.

“As an only child, I’ve come to a realization that besides my parents and family, sometimes I am nobody else’s first choice. I can relate to the character of Jill whose friends only ask her to hang out when everyone else is busy. This poem is about being the friend, but rarely being the first choice. Jack has many friends and choices, but Jill only has Jack.”
