What does a poem mean? Dealing with ambiguity and complexity in the classroom

One of the toughest parts about teaching poetry (both for teachers and students) is balancing the need to peg down the meaning a poem with the fact that a poem can be interpreted in many different ways. How do you create this balance with your students?
