Biography

The English poet Charlotte Smith (1749-1806) was an unhappily married mother of twelve (only six children survived), who managed to write her first book of poetry, Elegiac Sonnets, while serving time with her husband in debtor’s prison. Admired for her poetry by the Romantic poets, Smith also wrote nine Gothic romances in ten years, beginning with the popular Emmeline.
