Biography

Faith Arkorful is a poet from Toronto whose work has been published in journals that include Brick, Hobart, Canthius, The Puritan, and the Hart House Review, among other places. Arkorful’s work, known for its clarity and power, often focuses on family, providing intimate testimony about the experience of being Black in Canada, and how injustices and violence bleed into her dreams and her daily life. Her moving poem “Family Affair” was short-listed for the CBC Literary Prize in 2019, and "Vacation" was selected by acclaimed poet Hoa Nguyen for inclusion in the Best Canadian Poetry in English 2018 anthology. In 2020, Arkorful was introduced by 2021 Griffin Poetry Prize-wining poet Canisia Lubrin in an article about up-and-coming poets in ARC Poetry, and “Desire,/Hyenas” received an honourable mention at the 2020 National Magazine Awards. Arkorful is also a performance poet, and adds her voice to those of other BIPOC and feminist artists in projects such as Panic in the Labyrinth.
