Happy Black History Month

the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice
dark or light we all got abused
separated children from their mother
black is beautiful black is excellence
our skin is not only our greatest elements
i see a black woman use filter
they have already killed the confidence in her
black is beauty in all types of shades
black is fighting for scholarship through your grades
black is deeper than a skin tone
around a different race you feel unknown
you across the globe you only to talk to your cousins on the phone
now i have to take this chance and change their perspective
through my rhymes, through my words, through my adjectives
to educate these people and change the narrative
we respect our hair because that's our crown
they laugh at our features and call us clowns
they don't see the beauty in black woman's afro
they want it narrow straight like an arrow
black is beautiful there's nothing i would change
listen to my words don't just skip to the next page

“I’m a black man who was born and raised in South Africa and I recently moved to Canada and learnt about the history of my ancestors who suffered and didn’t get the chance to speak. I wrote this as a way of being a voice for them.”
