Intergenerational Love

Lesson Introduction

This lesson plan will provide an opportunity to explore the idea of intergenerational love through poetry, allowing students to connect to their own positive attributes while recognizing that these are a combination of the generations of family that came before them, and the influential figures who have been imperative to their upbringing.

**(It should be noted that some students may have difficult home lives, or may have a family configuration that does not give them a strong sense of connection to past generations, or even negative feelings about them. In this scenario, students should focus on the figures who have been the most impactful on them so far – whether that’s a foster parent, sibling, aunt, etc.)

Learning Objectives

  • Analysis: analyze a piece of writing for context and meaning
  • Critical thinking: considering the perspective of a variety of people in their own lives while communicating clearly with an audience
  • Understanding how relationships and cultural contexts shape who they are and how they build relationship with others
  • Recognizing and appreciating different perspectives
  • Incorporating enhanced awareness of context and relationships in their own poetry
